Meet Your Host, Antonio Diaz

South of the Border Restaurant in Rogers Park is the fruition of a great idea. Antonio Diaz wanted to celebrate best of South of the Border cuisine, whether the border is the Rio Grand, the Gulf of Mexico, or the Mason Dixon. Use the freshest ingredients, make everything to your liking, and serve it with a smile.

Come in and try the Arrepos-to die for. Or the Cuban sandwich, always freshly made. Or our signature Jibarito, or our Texas Burger-cooked the way you like it.

Finally, Antonio brought to Rogers Park the one thing missing from most menus. For what is a Latin restaurant without Mojito’s, Pina Coladas, and of course, Margaritas? We think our cocktails are are the best in all of Chicago.

South of the Border is a place for friends and family and amazing food.

  • The food here is amazing. One of the best Cuban Sandwiches I've had. Great Chicken Enchiladas. Try the tostones (crisp plantains), they are delicious.

    Good food. Good service. It's nice to have a variety of Latin American dishes. We have many excellent Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood. This adds both Cuban and Puerto Rican Specialties to the mix.

    positive review  Antonio is wonderful and the food is great! Tostones and enchiladas are my favs but the grilled cheese and tomato soup aren’t bad either 🙂 Thursday are $6 margaritas ?

  •   I went for the 1st time a few days ago with my kids nanny to have dinner & it was pretty good food, but they have some rude & nosey waitresses. I expected to have a quiet dinner before going home. We were having a conversation & laughing but while waiting for the food, the young girl came back & asked "did I just hear 1 of u say u have covid" We never said that so maybe she shouldn't try to be listening to other peoples conversations. After that she kept coming by our table & just standing there close by. If I'm going to dine in, then employers need to be respectful of customers, including not listening to people's conversations & interrupting & jumping into their conversations.

  •   A gem- amazing food, friendly service (Emilio was terrific), and the South of the Border margay is the way to go. Here for a show at the Rhapsody Theater down the street. Definitely recommend!

      I can definitely say that is the best Mexican restaurant in Chicago. I've almost tried every dishes there. Of you will visit it you must first check their margaritas. They are delicious

  •   Ana was very friendly and it seems she knows my friends well.

    I had Ropa Vieja and it was so tender and bottomless Mimosa was so refreshing and the portion was very generous!!

    Definitely a must go place when you are in Rogers Park Morse red line station area!

      I thought we had found our neighborhood bar. . There was a bartender who was cool. He no longer works there. Went for drinks tonight; Thursday. Not very busy but steady. Only 2 people working the restaurant besides the cooks. One guy brought chips and salsa after we were there for 5-7 minutes. We told him we were ready to order. He told us " he's gonna get you". We sat for about 15-20 minutes while they take phone orders, new orders, bus tables, take out trash, tend to the people sitting at the bar and cash patrons out. The guy behind the bar even had time to get a drink of water. I ate some chips and salsa then we left. A little courtesy goes a long way. We really liked it there. The atmosphere was great; diverse. But we won't be going back.

  •   Amazing!!! The people working are always so kind and sweet and the food is delicious! Their portions are very generous (expect leftovers)! Perfect place to go for some good food or good drinks!!

      Food is GREAT. Service is GOOD. I happened to see the owner & seemed like an asshole. Lucky for him he has good customers & great employees to get his ass in business. Ambiance is decent too.

  •   Best tacos in Rogers Park! Great service and amazing tacos that always hit. The margaritas are huge and they have drink deals everyday for a different drink! The steak tacos are a classic and a must! I recently tried to nachos and they were solid too. They also get points for having fountain Dr. Pepper!

      The chipotle sauce was a nice touch! These were hot and crispy and a great start to the meal.
